EDARA: Educational Augmented Reality Authoring

Empowering Educators to Create AR.

Augmented Reality can make learning more visual, situated, and hands-on, yet it rarely makes it into everyday teaching in higher education. One of the main obstacles is content: creating or adapting AR learning materials usually requires technical skills most educators don’t have. EDARA brings seven partners from five European countries together to work on this problem. In project EDARA, European educators help co-design new AR authoring approaches, generative AI is explored as a supporting tool for content creation (where it makes pedagogical sense) and the resulting AR materials are piloted in real courses. The project builds on four open European AR authoring platforms, which are further developed alongside the project: MirageXR, ARTutor, smARtorials, and our own TrainAR.

TrainAR is our open-source authoring tool for procedural AR trainings on smartphones and tablets. Building on our earlier research on the design space of AR authoring tools, we develop it further with the feedback of educators as part of this project. A special focus is hereby on how AI can effectively be integrated into the authoring process. Besides this, we also support piloting and teacher training, for example, in nursing and engineering education, and contribute to the project’s guidelines on how AR authoring tools should be designed.

Project EDARA

This page represents our work in the context of EDARA, a European cooperation project on authoring tools for educational Augmented Reality. The project is coordinated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and brings together WEKIT Experience Capturing Solutions (Ireland), Democritus University of Thrace and the University of Macedonia (Greece), the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany), Lutsk National Technical University (Ukraine), and the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer.

Funding

The project EDARA is funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program under grant agreement 2026-1-NO01-KA220-HED-000462029.
